Melting pot

This is a melting pot which was used in the manufacture of golf balls. It can be seen, together with other items relating to the making of golf balls, in the Historylinks Museum at Dornoch.

Golf is known to have been played at Dornoch since the early seventeenth century. The first golf balls were wooded but were replaced sometime in the seventeenth century by 'featheries', a covered cowhide bag stuffed with goose feathers and covered with paint. Featheries lasted for two centuries until they were replaced by balls made of gutta percha, known as 'gutties'. Gutta percha is a rubber-like substance which was heated and moulded into golf balls
