HMS Hampshire

HMS Hampshire was a Devonshire-class armoured cruiser. She was built for the Royal Navy by Armstrong Whitworth, Elswick, Tyne and Wear and launched in 1903.

The ship was present at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. A few days later, having set out for Russia in very bad weather, she exploded and sank just off the coast of the Orkney mainland. It is believed that she hit a mine. 643 people lost their lives including the Secretary of State for War, Lord Kitchener. There were just 12 survivors.
