Laying of Foundation Stone for Church of Saint Mary's in the Fields

This image was recently highlighted in Am Baile's 'Picture Detective' feature, run in conjunction with the Inverness Courier.

The occasion has been identified as the laying of the foundation stone for the new Scottish Episcopal Church at Keppoch Road, Culloden, now called St Mary in the Fields. The photograph was taken in September 1992.

From left to right the gentlemen are: Mr Andrew Wright, Diocesan Architect (Law, Dunbar-Naismith, Forres); the Reverend Canon Arthur A Sinclair, Priest of both St John's, Southside Road, and St Mary in the Fields, Culloden; the Right Reverend George Sessford, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Moray, Ross and Caithness; and the Very Reverend Malcolm Grant, Provost of St Andrew's Cathedral, Inverness.

The Episcopal congregation at Culloden began in 1973, worshipping in various locations over the years. A site for a new church was purchased at the beginning of 1989, near the Culloden Centre. Building on the first phase - the hall/church, kitchen and vestry - began in September 1992. The work was completed ahead of schedule and regular services began the following year.
