Construction of Eastgate Shopping Centre, 1980s

This photograph shows the construction of part of the Eastgate Shopping Centre (Part I), at the corner of Millburn Road and Crown Road, Inverness.

The centre opened on Monday 28th February 1983. A wide range of retail outfits moved in including national companies such as Marks & Spencer, Boots the Chemists, Fine Fair Supermarket, Mothercare, Ratners Jewellers and Dorothy Perkins.

In 1993 the centre underwent a refurbishment but it was in 1997 that proposals were put forward for a much needed extension which would almost double the number of retail units from 34 to 64. The extension was completed in 2003 and included a bridge link to the other side of the road as well as a direct covered linkage with the Safeway Superstore. Eastgate (Phase II) was deemed one of 'the most impressive planning projects in Scotland in recent years' and was the overall winner of the Scottish Awards for Quality in Planning 2003.
