The late, great, Donald Riddell BEM, from Kirkhill near Inverness, was a fiddler, composer, and fiddle maker. He was also a Pipe Major in the Lovat Scouts. His pupils include Duncan Chisholm, Bruce MacGregor and Iain MacFarlane.

In this audio extract, Donald discusses his passion for fiddle making and mentions his involvement with the Lovat Scouts. The image shows Donald making one of his fiddles.

'I got every book I could lay hands on about fiddle making, studied them and of course, over the years, even today, I still get the Strad magazine. I don't say I can learn anything more out of it now because it's been all said and re-said ever so often but over the years you accumulate a vast fund of knowledge about it - it's inevitable. I'm sixty seven now and studied all these time except for during the war years when I was away in the army and of course by then I was a Pipe Major in the Lovat Scouts, you see? And that I couldn't play the fiddle or touch a fiddle then. And for a year or two after the war I still just played pipes but I came gradually back to the fiddle again and I started making them and people are - liked my fiddles and wanting them, with the result is I've got to make more and more of them and now I can't keep up with the number of people who want them made by me. I'd rather make fiddles than play them any day. Very keen on it'
