Main Street, Kyle of Lochalsh

The corner of Main Street and Station Road in Kyle of Lochalsh was always the scene of activity, and with photographer Duncan Macpherson working in his pharmacy across the road, there was plenty of opportunity to capture daily life in the village. Macpherson came to Kyle of Lochalsh and set up his business in 1912.

The substantial Bank of Scotland and Post Office building on the left was built in 1904 and on the right, with just a tiny corner visible, is the earlier 1895 Commercial Bank (later the Royal Bank of Scotland) mark the street as the commercial centre of the village. Piles of stone and rubble in front and to the side of the bank likely indicate work being carried out on the steps and walls. Along the street on the left is the Pioneer Stores which was said to sell everything from a needle to an anchor. On the right side is the Kyle Hotel, a business which was established before the railway terminus was extended from Stromferry.
