A mussel shell

Half of a mussel shell. The best mussel pearls are found in the Margaritifera freshwater mussel. In the past pearl fishing was often carried out by Travellers using glass bottomed buckets. They would make jewellery and ornaments from the pearls they collected.

In more recent years this species of mussel has become endangered and it is now illegal, in Britain, to kill or injure them
