During World War II the Highland railways played an important role, transporting freight and troops to and from the naval bases, airfields, coastal defences, and supply bases throughout the region. In this audio extract, a former railway employee recalls the special train services which became known as the 'Jellicos'.

'There was a general increase of traffics to the far north, Thurso especially. Admiralty had taken over Scapa Flow as a naval base. Passenger services had to be provided; the goings and comings of the naval personnel, the army personnel and the workmen engaged - employed by Balfour and Beattie. Those trains had a top priority; they took priority over every other train in the section except those run for the king and Mr. Churchill. They were closely watched by the R.T.O. [Railway Transportation Officer] at Thurso. The Jellico trains ran right up until the end of the war'
