Storm Damage on the Fort William Road, 1940s

This photograph shows a landslip on the Fort William road caused by a storm. The amount of rain that falls in a storm can make the ground unstable and cause a rush of mud and rocks down onto the road. In many places along roads that are at risk from landslips there are now nets on the hillsides. These nets help to contain the rubble should a landslip occur and decrease the risk of cars on the roads being hit
