On 6 August 1953 Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother accepted the Freedom of the Burgh of Inverness from Provost James MacKintosh Grigor. The ceremony took place inside the Playhouse Cinema. The Burgess Oath, written by Mr J S D Johnston, head of the Art department of Inverness Royal Academy, conluded that the Freedom was presented "in recognition of a life devoted to the service of the Nation, and the Commonwealth and Empire, and as an expression of the loyalty and affection which the Highlands and their Capital have forever felt for all members of the Royal Family"
