Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother visits Inverness, 1953

On 6 August 1953 Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother accepted the Freedom of the Burgh of Inverness from Provost James MacKintosh Grigor. She is pictured here in Bught Park where she addressed the men of the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, past and present, and boys of the Cameron Cadet Battalion.

The Burgess Oath to the Regiment, written by Mr J S D Johnston, head of the Art department of Inverness Royal Academy, conluded that the Freedom was presented "in recognition of the traditions gloriously created and splendidly maintained by this most distinguished regiment since its formation, and its devoted service to our beloved Queen and her Royal forbears at home and abroad, in peace and in war, and especially in recognition of the long and happy association of the Royal Burgh of Inverness with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, in which regiment so many of the citizens and their sons so proudly and gallantly served"
