In this photograph swimmers are setting off from Inverness on the Kessock Ferry swim in 1954. Crowds of people have gathered at the water's edge to cheer the swimmers on. The ferry is a stretch of water across the strait between the Moray and Beauly Firths, opposite Inverness. A ferry service ran from North Kessock to Inverness until the opening of the Kessock Bridge in 1982
