Urquhart Family Portrait

This photograph was taken at a reunion of the Urquhart family, of Inverness, possibly for a Golden Wedding. One of the family worked for the trading company Jardine Matheson and went to live in Hong Kong, where he married a Chinese woman. He and his family later moved to Canada. In the late 1940s, they visited Inverness and the Chinese Urquharts met their Scottish cousins.

Jardine Matheson was founded in Canton in 1832 by William Jardine, from Lochmaben, Dumfries and Galloway, and James Matheson from Lairg in Sutherland. The company promoted the founding of Hong Kong in the 1830s. They exported tea to Britain and imported coal, metals and machinery into China. Later they expanded their business to include Japan and India as well as other parts of China and developed their trading activities to include banking, shipping, insurance, sugar, cotton and mining
