Shepherd and dog

This shepherd and his dog were taking part in the International Sheep Dog Trials held at the Longman, Inverness, between 18 and 20 September 1952. The trials were held annually by the International Sheep Dog Society for competitors from Scotland, England and Wales. This was the first time that they had come to the Highlands. Each national team was made up of twleve handlers and their dogs, winners in their respective national competitions.

Sheepdog trials are common in hill farming areas. The first recorded sheepdog trials are said to have taken place at Bala in North Wales in 1873, but similar events were held in Scotland about the same period. In 1906, the International Sheep Dog Society was formed at Haddington, East Lothian, with the aim of stimulating interest in the shepherd and his calling, and of producing an improvement in the sheepdog itself. The Society insists that trials should be as near as possible to actual field conditions
