Prior to the opening of the Black Bridge in 1808, the Merkinch area could only be accessed by King Street. Because the estuary of the River Ness had several outlets, the area was often an island, as its name 'Merkinch', translating as 'Horse Island' indicates. This meant that Merkinch was classed as a village in its own right, until 1808, when it was incorporated into the Burgh
