The Lochalsh Hotel in Kyle of Lochalsh was built after the completion of the railway line from Inverness in 1897. In addition to the busy rail terminus the village was also the embarcation point for ferries to Skye and, until 1973, Stornoway. The first road arrived in Kyle in 1819, via Lochcarron.
