Sitting room, late 1950s

A comfortably-furnished room somewhere in the Highlands, seen here in 1959. The 1950s saw a considerable increase in the number of households owning a television. Many people bought one to watch the 1953 coronation. At first, there was only one channel, the BBC. In 1955, Independent television was introduced, funded by advertising. Popular programmes in the late 1950s included 'Armchair Theatre', 'The Brains Trust' and the quiz shows 'Double Your Money' and 'Take Your Pick'
