Gordon Highlanders recruits at Fort George, 1960-61

The photograph shows a squad of recruits for The Gordon Highlanders on completion of their training at Fort George. In late 1960, as part of plans to centralise Army training establishments, the Regimental Depots of the Highland Regiments were closed down. A new Highland Brigade Depot was to be built at Aberdeen and opened in1964. As a temporary measure the Depots of the Queen's Own Highlanders and The Gordon Highlanders were combined at Fort George, and Depots of The Black Watch and The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders at Stirling Castle. The photograph of a squad of Gordon recruits was taken at Fort George in late 1960 or early 1961.
