Mr Johnstone, Chief Constable

John Johnstone, photographed here on 28 November 1961, was Chief Constable of the Inverness-shire Constabulary. The county of Inverness-shire set up the first police force in the Highlands in 1840. From 1841, the force also policed the Burgh of Inverness, until the Inverness Burgh Police was established in 1847. The Inverness-shire Constabulary was based at the castle and the Inverness Burgh Police were in Castle Wynd, only a few yards away. The two forces merged in 1968 to form the Inverness Constabulary
