Constructing "Highland 1" at Nigg, 1974

This photograph was taken at Nigg Yard in the summer of 1974. It shows three employees standing in front of the jacket of the oil platform known as "Highland 1". The man on the right is Callum MacMillan, who was a welder at the site.

At the yard, the colour of an employee's working hat denoted his occupation: electricians wore yellow hats, scaffolders wore red hats, welders and fabricators wore green hats (and leather coats) while labourers wore white hats. Foremen had a rectangle painted on the side of their hats which was in the colour of their particular trade.

The jacket is the vertical section of the platform which is piled or driven into the sea bed. They are made of steel tubes. When completed, the platform was taken to BP's Forties oil field.

Beyond the crane is the dock gate.
