German U-boat (U-992) at Loch Eriboll

This photograph shows the German military submarine, or U-boat, U-992, mooring alongside HMCS Nene of the 9th Canadian Escort Group on 19 May 1945 at Loch Eriboll, after having capitulated at Narvik, Norway ten days earlier. Later in the month U-992 was moved to Loch Ryan for 'Operation Deadlight', the scuttling of all the surrendered German U-boats near the end of World War II.

Loch Eriboll is the deepest sea loch in the United Kingdom, once used as an important naval anchorage. It was an important German U-boat surrender rendezvous point in May 1945 when over thirty U-boats came into the loch.
