Carved Medieval Graveslab, Kilmartin

Kilmartin Parish Church in Kilmartin Valley, just north of Lochgilphead in Argyll, dates from 1835 but is built on a much earlier religious site. The church and graveyard contain one of the largest collections of carved grave slabs in Scotland dating from around 1300 to 1700. This medieval example of an armoured warrior with his spear is displayed with several others in a stone building in the graveyard. Its design is typical of the West Highland carving of the 14th and 15th centuries and similar examples can be found at Oronsay, Iona and Knapdale.
