This photograph shows the remains of the circular medieval church at Orphir, Orkney. The church dates from the late 11th or 12th century and is associated with Earl Hakon (d. 1122). It is modelled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a place Earl Hakon had visited. Excavated remains close to the church may be the Earl's residence or 'Bu' which is described in the 'Orkneyinga Saga' as standing next to the church
