Sunset over Ardnamurchan

A photograph, taken on 26 December 2005, of a sunset over Ardnamurchan, on the west coast of Scotland.

Ardnamurchan is a peninsula in Lochaber, with a total area of 50 square miles. Remote and rugged, the peninsula is formed from the remains of a 55 million year old Caldera, and it is considered an area of special geological interest. Two battles were fought in the northeast extent of the peninsula, in the bays between Sgeir a' Chaolais and Gortenfern. The first involved the Vikings, and the second was fought around 1297, between Edward I of England and Roderick of Bute, at the head of an army from the islands.
