Herons in Arisaig Bay

Two herons are seen perched on rocks in Arisaig Bay. The one in the foreground is standing, neck outstretched, looking for food, while the other is holding its neck down close to its chest.

Arisaig lies 7 miles (11 km) south of Mallaig at the head of Loch nan Ceall in Lochaber district. As part of the 'Road to the Isles', the area around Arisaig has become popular with tourists, especially since the opening of the West Highland Extension Railway in 1901. The area has associations with St Maelrubha and Bonnie Prince Charlie. During World War II it was used as a training ground for secret agents and commandos.
