This photograph shows a view south to the village of Kyleakin, on the east coast of the Isle of Skye, and across to Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland. Kyleakin derives its name from 'Strait of Haakon', after King Haakon IV of Norway whose fleet moored there prior to the Battle of Largs, which saw an end to the Norwegian rule of the island. Castle Moil, the ruins of a fifeeteenth century castle, can be seen overlooking the village to the south.

A ferry once linked Kyleakin to the mainland, but was discontinued in 1995 when the Skye Bridge was completed.
