Road to Achmelvich

This photograph shows a sign post indicating the direction towards Achmelvich. The area lies just three miles north-west of the coastal village of Lochinver, Sutherland. The single track road from Lochinver can be challenging to drive, but this does not stop intrepid visitors from making the journey to visit Achmelvich's collection of stunning white-sand beaches year round.

The 'Hermit's Castle' is another local landmark, often arousing curiosity and incredulity in equal measure. Built by David Scott, an English architect, in the 1950s, some have claimed it to be Europe's smallest castle. Today, it is occasionally used as a bothy by travellers.

Those visiting the region may wish to seek accommodation at the local Youth Hostel or the two caravan and tenting parks which have sprung up in the vicinity of the beach.
