Gas Works

This is a photograph of the derelict gasworks, which were built in 1864. These buildings fell into disuse as alternative sources of energy were utilised by the community. At one time the gasworks would have been of vital importance, because fossil fuels were the easiest to convert into electricity.

As new technology developed, the hydroelectric board began to make central heating an easier option, and gas was no longer used as a fuel.
