Farmer with Cart at Balnagrantach

This photograph depicts a farmer from the earlier part of the 20th Century. He has a horse drawn cart, which contains numerous farm implements. The cart contains a drill plough, which was used for digging furrows into the field. Also there is a grubber, which was an implement used for weeding.

At one stage, a plough would have required a team of oxen to pull it. Whilst the manufacture of smaller, lighter farm implements gave many benefits to the rural areas, they also broke the symbiotic bonds that held them together.
