The Abernethy and Duthil Volunteers were a voluntary rifle regiment, raised in the vicinity of Grantown-on-Spey. Abernethy and Duthil were the first volunteer company to form in Strathspey, in 1860. Its founding officers were Captain Duncan Menzies and Lieutenant J. Stewart. The trophies in the foreground of the photograph reflect the trophies and awards they received for their shooting prowess.
