Benbecula is an island in the Outer Hebrides, located between North and South Uist. It covers an area of 51 square kilometres. At the time of the 2001 Census, the island had a population of 1249. Known as 'Beinn nam Fadhla' in Gaelic meaning 'Mountain of the Fords', Benbecula's main settlement is Balivanich in the north-east. There is still a strong Gaelic speaking presence on the island, with 56 percent of the population classified as Gaelic speakers in the 2001 Census.
