Loading cattle onto boat Armadale, Skye 1928

A photograph, taken in 1928, showing cattle being loaded onto a boat in Armadale, on the south-western extent of Skye. Ferries have been making regular crossings from Mallaig to Armadale since before the eighteenth century, and it was the primary route used by crofters to drive their cattle to the southern markets. Today, most traffic makes its way across to the Island of Skye via the Skye Bridge. However, the Armadale - Mallaig crossing is located on the scenic coastal route, and many tourists make the crossing each year.

Armadale is a settlement on the Sleat peninsula. It is the port for the ferry to Mallaig and nearby visitor attractions include Armadale Bay, Armadale Castle and the Clan Donald Visitor Centre.
