Kilmuir Cattle Sale, Skye in June 1957

This photograph shows a cattle sale at Kilmuir, in the north of Skye, in June 1957. As well as local crofters and cattle buyers, Col. Neil McLean (28 November 1918 - 17 November 1986) the MP for Inverness-shire is present. He is standing at the back, on the extreme left of the photograph, and is wearing a beret.

The officer in uniform at the back of the photograph has been identified as Alex Stoddart from Kilbride, the local RSPCA representative. Facing the camera, wearing a cap and turned-down wellington boots, is Murdo Bruce from Uig.

The central group of four men, closest to the camera, includes Duncan MacRae from Achmore near Kyle (facing the camera and wearing plus fours), Duncan Lamont from Staffin and possibly Charlie Beaton of Totarder. Just seen behind them (wearing a 'fore and aft' hat) is Duncan, or Duchan, MacPherson from Torvaig.

On the right towards the back, with head lowered and talking to a man resting his hands on his crook is Col. Jock Macdonald, of Viewfield House in Portree. He seems to be deep in conversation with John Nicolson of Cuidreach. Others present in the photograph include D.A. MacIntosh from Linicro, Roderick Maclean from Kilmuir and J.A. MacDonald of Totescore.
