M6598, a BR Third Class brake compo

This photograph shows British Railways brake compo No. M6598. It had a corridor along one side.

It was originally built as a sleeping car for the Highland Railway (No. 8) and passed into the hands of the London Midland & Scottish Railway after the grouping. It was converted to a Third Class brake compo and given the number 6598.

It was still in use after nationalisation and the prefix M was applied by British Railways to indicate that it had originated from the LMS.
