This Pullman car, named 'Balmoral', was built by the Pullman Car Company in Detroit in the early 1880s. During its relatively short working life it was owned by the Midland Railway, the Great Northern Railway and, finally, by the Highland Railway, which withdrew it from service in 1909. The coach passed into private ownership and its condition deteriorated markedly, as can be seen, but it was eventually rescued by Brighton Railway Museum and painstakingly preserved. Sadly, its sister coach, 'Dunrobin' could not be saved.
