A Highland Railway 'Seafield' class loco

A photograph of a Highland Railway 'Seafield' class locomotive.

The seven locomotives in this class were built for the Inverness & Aberdeen Junction Railway by Hawthorns of Leith in 1858 or 1859. Designed by Alexander Allan, Locomotive Superintendent of the Scottish Central Railway, they had a 2-4-0 wheel arrangement and were built specifically for goods traffic. All were rebuilt with bigger cylinders between 1873 and 1886. They were also renamed at the same time.
