HR 5 'Tain'

A photograph of HR No. 5 'Tain'. Several crew and other railway employees are also pictured.

This locomotive was built for the Inverness & Aberdeen Junction Railway by Hawthorns of Leith in February 1858. It was the first of the Alexander Alan-designed 'Seafield' class and originally had a 2-4-0 wheel arrangement. It was named 'Seafield' and was intended to be used specifically for goods traffic.

It was transferred to the newly-formed Highland Railway in 1865. The HR had it rebuilt in 1880 with larger cylinders and a new name, 'Tain'. It worked until May 1897 when it was withdrawn.
