A photograph of two HR class '18' engines, including No. 20 'Birnam'.

These locomotives were built for the Inverness & Aberdeen Junction Railway by Sharp Stewart in August 1863, part of the ten-strong '18' class. They had 2-4-0 wheel arrangements. They passed to the newly-formed Highland Railway in 1865. The HR had 27 rebuilt with new cylinders and other fittings in June 1872 and again ten years later. It was given a new number, 38, in August 1902, before being withdrawn in 1906.
