Letter to the Scotch Education Department

A copy of a letter to the Scotch Education Department on the 11th November 1880. This letter was in reply to Education Department letters of 10th August and 19th October. The School Board for Kylerhea states that the school premises are the property of the School Board.

The letter also states that the educational needs of the school could be better met by a regular teacher provided by the SSPCK than by a pupil teacher under the supervision of a teacher from a neighbouring school.

The Society in Scotland for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge was established in 1709 to teach the reading of the Holy Scriptures and other pious books. The Society was initially anti-Gaelic but later realised that teaching people to read in a language that was not their own did not work and they actively encouraged the publication of the Scriptures in Gaelic.

This manuscript is from the collection of the Clan Donald Library and Museum of the Isles, Isle of Skye
