Contract betwixt Sir Alexander MacDonald and Robert Murray Esq

Contract for the sale of cattle from the MacDonald estates, 1739.
Alexander MacDonald of MacDonald will sell to Robert Murray and Donald MacLaren "two hundred good and mercatable cows and stotts (young bulls) of the breed of Northwest, twenty less or more".

The agreed price for each cow or stot was £1 4s 6d. Robert Murray and Donald MacLaren were to pay an advanced price of £105 for the cattle but if Lord MacDonald failed to deliver any cattle then he was to compensate Murray and MacLaren the price of each individual animal.

The writing of the document is still clear and readable after 160 years. Throughout the legal document there is not a full stop. It is just one long sentence.

This manuscript has been digitised from a collection of the Clan Donald Library and Museum of the Isles, Isle of Skye
