Achterneed is on the Kyle of Lochalsh line, 5 miles (8km) out of Dingwall. It was opened on 19 August 1870 and originally called 'Strathpeffer' until the Strathpeffer branch opened on1 June 1985. It closed in 1964 but reopened as an unadvertised halt 8 February 1965.
