Highland Railway

This photograph shows the summit at Drumochter Pass, with the board which marked this summit, the highest on a main line railway in the UK. The board has since been replaced several times.
This section of railway was opened on 9th September 1863, completing the through route from Perth to Inverness. Originally single track, the second one was added about 1900. The line remains open.
