A total of 309 Class 37 diesel locomotives were built for British Railways between 1960 and 1965. They are sometimes referred to as English Electric Type 3 locos and nicknamed 'Tractors' due to the distinctive sound of their exhausts.

The locomotive leading this train, 37419, was built by English Electric in 1965. It was withdrawn from service in 2006.
