Sutherland Landscape

Sutherland is one of the Highland Council areas and located in the north of Scotland. Originally it was the 'south land' of the Vikings and under Norse rule until the 12th Century when William the Lion claimed the land for Scotland. Its highest point is Ben More Assynt and the main town is Dornoch. In 2001 Sutherland had a population of around 13,500 people. The area is sometimes referred to as the Reay Country in English and known as Cataibh (land of the Cat people) in Gaelic. Part of Sutherland, the north west, was historically known as Dùthaich MhicAoidh or Mackay Country.
