The Black Mount is an expanse of boggy moorland, located at the western end of Rannoch Moor, 6.5 km to the north of Bridge of Orchy.

Rannoch Moor is an elevated plateau of lochs, peat bogs and streams which cover around 80 square kilometres. The moor is surrounded by mountains and was formed by glacial movement over 20,000 years ago. The moor is crossed north to south by the A82 and by the West Highland Railway.
