Inveraray Castle

The original Inveraray Castle was built in the 15th century by Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll. Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll, had the castle rebuilt in its present location between 1744 and 1758, having the village of Inveraray demolished and rebuilt a mile away at the same time so that it wouldn't impinge on the castle's view. The new castle was designed by the architect Roger Morris from a sketch by Sir John Vanbrugh, the architect of Blenheim Palace. The castle interiors have been improved and restored throughout the years. The last major restoration was commissioned by the 12th Duke in the 1990s following a fire in 1975.

Inveraray Castle has a square layout with a round tower at each corner. The castle overlooks Loch Shira and Loch Fyne and is still the seat of the Dukes of Argyll who are also the chiefs of the Clan Campbell.
