Black Mount, Rannoch Moor

At an elevation of over 1000ft and reaching 1260ft (394m) at some points, Rannoch Moor is an elevated plateau of lochs, peat bogs and streams which cover around 50 square miles. The moor is surrounded by mountains and was formed by glacial movement over 20,000 years ago. The moor is crossed north to south by the A82 and by the West Highland Railway. Because of the volume of peat on the moor the railway had to be floated on a bed of tree roots, brushwood and ash to stop it from sinking.

According to Don Rosa, the creator of the Scrooge McDuck stories, Castle McDuck (the ancestral home of the Clan McDuck) is located on Rannoch Moor.
