The Dornoch Firth is located on the east coast of Scotland, to the north of Inverness. In 1991 the Dornoch Bridge was built, spanning the firth and providing a shorter route between Inverness and Thurso.

0n 16 August 1809, the Meikle ferry that crossed the narrows of Dornoch Firth capsized. Ninety nine people were drowned in the disaster, and only twelve were saved. The Meikle Ferry Fund was established after the tragedy to provide financial aid to the families of those who drowned.
