Crinan Canal at Crinan Basin

Crinan Canal runs between Crinan and Ardrishaig, and is approximately 14.5 km (9 miles) in length. This image, taken from Crinan, shows the Crinan Canal basin in the foreground, and Loch Crinan behind.

Designed by John Rennie, the canal was built between 1793-1801 and allowed boats to avoid the difficult passage around the Mull of Kintyre, shortening the length of the journey between Crinan and Ardrishaig by 160 km (100 miles).

The Crinan Canal is closely associated with the Clyde Puffer. These were small cargo vessels designed to fit the Forth and Clyde and Crinan Canals, and were immortalised in Neil Munro's tales of Para Handy and the 'Vital Spark'.
