The Spouting Cave, Iona

This photograph shows the Spouting Cave on the island of Iona. It was taken by George Washington Wilson (1823 - 1893) an Aberdeen-based photographer who travelled extensively in Scotland, and abroad, taking landscape photographs with the aid of a portable darkroom. He photographed Queen Victoria and was commissioned by her to record the construction of Balmoral.

The Spouting Cave, situated on the south west coast of Iona, is a natural phenomenon. At low to medium tide, with a decent swell and a north westerly breeze, a fountain of spray bursts above the cliff.
